..... Coleman fuel (white gas) is available at 7-Eleven stores and supermarkets in Hilo. The trailhead, Waipi`o lookout, has covered picnic tables and restrooms, but no drinking water......

 

DAY ONE - Waipi`o lookout to Waimanu Valley

..... The same warning applies to the stream in Waimanu Valley. If the water there is high, look for a metal rowboat and pull yourself across using the ropes......

Route Description

..... Pass an elevated compost toilet on the right.
Reach Waimanu Stream and ford it (map point L). Again, there is no official crossing. Like Waipi`o, Waimanu Stream is narrower and shallower at its mouth near the ocean; however, the current can be stronger there. A bit inland the stream is more wide, deep and slow moving. Take your pick. If the water is high, take the metal rowboat.
Once across, find your assigned campsite.
