..... There is a public bus, known as Hele-on, from Hilo to the National Park once a day. Call the Hawai`i County Transit System at (808) 961-8744 for the current schedule......

 

DAY TWO - Day hike toward Pu`u `O`o

The day hike toward Pu`u `O`o is currently closed. The cone partially collapsed in January, 1997, and a recent eruption covered the trail near the rim of Napau Crater. The campsite is still open and makes a good two-day trip. Call the National Park for the very latest update.

 

DAY THREE - Napau Crater to Kealakomo overlook

Route Description

..... Shortly afterward, reach the junction with the Naulu Trail (map point L). Bear right on it. (To the left the Kalapana Trail, now open, continues down to the coast at Lae`apuki.)

Cross another section of pavement, and then the road disappears for good under the lava......
